As far as crazy nights go, last night will go down as one for the record books. I’m not sure how it all started but for as long as I can remember, my brother and I developed this tendency to flank our friends and walk on either side of them…Although we’re not big, a joke started that being Asian we looked like bodyguards - apparently all of us know martial arts…which isn’t true by the way, just in case the stereotype has been that ingrained.
Since last night was Xav’s last weekend in Cape Town before he left for Europe and NYC; he requested that we act as his hired guns for the evening. Just as an aside we’ll be glad to let our bodyguard services to anyone, but be warned; should trouble arise we may turn and run like sissy girls…our services are not refundable.
The M.O. was supposed to be that he was the son of a powerful French ambassador, and that we were to ask anybody who came within 2 feet to politely step back and give him space.
As the night began we rounded up the troops me, Joe, Xav and Action Dan and headed out to craziness. We were to meet up with Michael Fassbender, the guy who played Stelio(“Then we shall fight in the shade.”) in the 300 movie, as he’s working with Action Dan on a British Civil War film. Ernst met up with us a little bit later in the evening as well. When ever a bunch of blokes get together you know a good time is to be had, but It was even more fun last night as we were playing the fool and acting out our roles.
At the end of a big evening in Cape Town, it’s customary to get a pie form the 24 hour Engen in Orange Street. There’s always some interesting folk at the store in the wee hours of the morning; and it always surprises me who you’re going to meet . We starting chatting and made friends with two British girls, one of them, by chance happened to come from the same place Dan is from in Leeds.
The taxi that had dropped them off had told them that it was fine to walk back to their backpackers… in the middle of the night…although I’m sure they would have been fine; it’s perhaps not the best idea to walk alone in the dark, just two girls; and being ever chivalrous we figured we’d drop them off on our way home.
Done like true body guards; at the end of the evening, we did actually get to do our fair share of protecting! For those of you who are not from South Africa, it is a pretty safe place…so long as you use a little common sense and not open yourself up to potentially dangerous situations, just like in any other country that you might happen to be visiting.

Going Down to South Park
Pretty impressed that after a big night, that I still managed to wake up relatively early to make it to the gym this morning! Was a rather unexpected evening out, but it turned into a great one, we started off at the Oblivion wine bar and restaurant where they threw a back to school party…I’m pretty certain however that schools don’t let their learners (not students by the way, as the South African government has categorically stated that this is not the correct term to use for individuals attending school at the primary and secondary levels) behave in the fashion that was to found at the party.
From Oblivion we made our way to Jade, where we dominated the dance floor. At one point I think I might have even pulled out some break dance moves. To end the night off, we moved to my old favourite hangout FTV. Quite a productive night of club hopping! So it was quite a surprise for me too, that my internal alarm woke me up.
After my gym session, as a reward I decided to just chill out and go down to South Park and meet some friends of mine. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are two of my biggest heroes. All through out varsity, I dreamt of being like them and create my own animated series> as it so happens I actually have a hamster character that I have developed and few scripts. The only thing left for me to do is actually sit down animate it and try get someone to buy into the idea. That of course is totally the easy part…
I’m a huge fan of South Park but many people think that it is just stupid toilet humour. The series is actually frightfully thought provoking and Trey and Matt are in my opinion the best satirists, ever. From current affairs, regarding politics and new lifestyle trends, they seem to stay on top of their game and rip apart and show how ridiculously serious we as society can take things. I understand where a lot of it can seem crude and can offend people but if you watch South Park with a pinch of salt, there generally is a pretty valid point behind each episode…Although for some episodes, this can pose as quite a challenge.

Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th! I’ve never been a superstitious kind of guy…until today! Somehow everything that could possibly go wrong at work did. To spare you from the boring details I had to deploy an application to a client site, but it was impossible to get right due to the corporate red tape that is associated to big companies .
The gist of my problem was, I was not allowed to log on to a PC that was sitting right next to me, but instead had to phone some dude, who is located offsite i.e. not in the same building and ask him to remote terminal service into the PC and do the deploy for me. To add to it we encountered some problems with the PC which we could have changed there and then, but because of all corporate bureaucracy. I would have had to get about 10 documents signed by higher powers, to authorize the changes ARGGGGGGG! (Some of the IT jargon has been simplified for the sake of understandability).
Anyways also had some code issues from the team in India, so had to stay in late, to finish up some work. Was supposed to go to some party with Infected Mushrooms(?) Mate! I don’t have a clue who they are, I think they could be some Trance act from Israel? But Xav, Action Dan, Sabine and the rest were going so it would have been stellar!
Oh well I suppose it could have been worse…I could have been stabbed by the two guys having a brawl outside my office as I left…
Last night however was great, a group of us decided to check out Jade for a Thursday evening out on the town, also we wanted to celebrate Sabine’s new found freedom as she finished the last exam of her University career. I always enjoy going out more when I have some great company, especially when the company is a bevy of beautiful women! Jade is surprisingly busy on Thurday evenings…considering the fact that it is a school night, but I suppose I can’t pass judgment since I was there too.
Hip hop seemed to be the flavour of the evening, and the other Kast sister (Sabine and Stef’s mom, who could pass off as their sister), Ingrid showed us how it’s done on the dance floor. I flail around like a fish out of water, but at least I try…I think I’m just lucky that I have a little bit of timing from playing guitar and skip rope jumping so I don’t appear to be a complete retard…or do I? Someone would tell me if I did right? Cos seriously it ain’t cool to let a brother hang like that.

TKO
The Bas Rutten System is the real deal! What is this system you may ask? It’s a workout which is specifically designed, by some crazy mixed martial artist, named Bas Rutten, to keep one fit in confined spaces. Simply explained it is 7 rounds of pure, calorie smashing goodness.
Each round lasts 3 minutes and consists of the recording of some guy (apparently Bas himself, but I’m convinced it’s some lazy voice over guy, sitting on a comfy sofa) shouting at you to kick, punch, do push ups, jumps etc. And in between these rounds there is a 1 minute break for you to try to catch your breath.
I’ve actually heard about it for a while and some of my mates: Junior, Action Dan and Paul; have raved about it and have been hooked since making Generation Kill, a hectic HBO, mini-series about the Gulf War (If any of you are lucky enough, to be in the US at the time, the mini-series starts in July).
I’ve been dying to check the workout out but haven’t had the opportunity, until today. At the little gym in my complex, where I was letting out some steam on the boxing bags after a long day at work, my neighbour, Oliver caught me and asked if I wanted to try a cool workout with him. I agreed and so it began.
Just a word of caution it’s not as easy as it first appears. The first round seemed pretty leisurely but come round 4 or 5; you really start working up a sweat! Reminded me of some of the drills I used to do with my boxing mentor Sandile…minus the body shots and bruises. I’m hooked…and will definitely try, find the workout on the internet and continue it as part of my training regime.
I was in serious need of a recharge after the workout and what better way to get the energy levels back up than with a bit of low GI, rice pasta, courtesy of Bini. A get together with good food and good company still remains my favourite way to spend the evening, but while the rest have gone to have some fun at the Jade Bar. I’m about to retire on account of a TKO.
